Tips I Learnt from a Pro Makeup Artist for Natural Looking Skin

I’ve always admired professional artists’ makeup on celebs and have wondered what it would be like to have my makeup applied by a professional MUA for one simple reason: am I doing it right at home? My makeup knowledge and skill comes from YouTube tutorials and trial and error. I’ve had this whirlpool curiosity of ‘have I been doing it...

WILD PLUMS One thing that lockdown has encouraged WILD PLUMS
One thing that lockdown has encouraged is my appreciation for our garden. My mum has grown so many beautiful fruits and vegetables in our garden including this amazing plum tree. In previous years we have been on holiday when these fruits ripened and were not able to make the most of them. This year; we harvested all the plums and made bottles and bottles of plum jam that we gifted to friends and family -- and quite honestly? It's one of the best jams that I've tried.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHAT?
PLUM JAM – INGREDIENT RATIOS
- Use the same weight of sugar as fruit.
- Use 1-2 tbsp lemon juice per 500 g of fruit. Riper fruit needs more lemon, firmer fruit needs less.
- 250g of fruit makes about 600 g of jam.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW?
– Remove the stones and cut each plum into about 8 pieces.
– Put half the chopped plums into a bowl and pour half the sugar over. Repeat and make a second layer.
- Leave overnight. The sugar will draw out the plum juice and make a thick syrup.
– Sterilize clean jam jars and lids by placing them on a baking tray in the oven at 120°C/250°F/GM1.
– Transfer the plum and sugar mixture to a large saucepan or preserving pan, and simmer gently until all the sugar is dissolved. Add the lemon juice.
– Once the sugar has dissolved, heat the mixture quickly to a rolling boil. Then start testing to see if will set. It should reach 105C.
- Seal the lids while the jam is still hot and leave bottle upside down. As it cools, you’ll hear the lids pop as the vacuum forms.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW LONG DOES PLUM JAM LAST?
If you have made the jam properly with quality fruit, and the lid has sealed properly, your jam should last for years stored in a cool dark cupboard. It will thicken and darken over time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Homemade jam will be fine in a cupboard for 4 weeks after opening.
You know your body better than your doctors do. If You know your body better than your doctors do. If you notice something has changed, take action and push back if your GP (doctor) gives you excuses for why you may be experiencing hair loss.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have gone to my GP many times over the last 10 years informing them that I'm losing a lot of hair and that I didn't feel like it was normal. Their initial response the first few times I raised a concern? That it was “normal to lose 50-100 hairs a day.” What I perhaps didn't know to express was that yes, it's normal to lose that amount -- only when there is regrowth. It was only last year, after being sent to multiple blood tests and receiving normal health reports, I grew fed up and decided to reach out to a trichologist.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Only in speaking to a professional who specialises in human hair and scalp, did I come to realise that though I was prescribed iron tablets for being borderline anaemic, I should be on a higher dose. Though my Vitamin D levels were low and I was prescribed tablets, I should be on a higher dose. Dandruff is also a contributor to hair loss - something I'd suffered with on and off since I hit puberty. Depression and stress are also factors that contribute to hair loss. It's your body's way of telling you that something is wrong, so pay attention to the signs and take action.

Oof. Oh boy ... alright, here we go. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Oof. Oh boy ... alright, here we go.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don't know why it's taken me such a long time to share this -- well actually, that's a lie. I do know why. Hair loss is something that is often brushed aside, hidden under depths of shame and despair as another 'taboo' topic that are deemed too uncouth for women to talk about openly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But in my research to improve my self esteem and find ways to prevent further hair loss; I quickly realised that this is a condition that affects a huge percentage of men (my dad included) and women. If you type in hair loss into Google, there are 1.6 billion results. The first few pages of results are targeted towards men and the general symptoms of hair loss. It's only when you specify 'hair loss women' do you realise that 907 million (57%) of those results are relevant to women.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And suddenly, I realised that I am not alone in my suffering. So, #letstalkabouthairloss and remove this taboo that currently surrounds it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The biggest struggles I've faced while producing content on social media and my blog has been about finding my voice and not falling into the masses of bloggers who publish the same deliverables. Perhaps the reason why I've experienced this writer's block is because I've been too afraid to speak out about something that I've considered exceptionally personal and incredibly private.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are different types of hair loss and I am well aware that I have not been dealt the worst cards - but every single person's suffering is as valid. I would like to use this platform to speak about my journey & the steps I'm taking to help my hair in hopes that I will bring some positivity and confidence to someone else who is going through the same things that I am.
